USA –PowerBall

The US Powerball happens to be one of the more popular lotteries found in the US and is conducted in a number of states including: Connecticut, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Arkansas, Iowa, Idaho, Florida, Illinois, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Kansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana, New Hampshire, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, North Dakota, New Mexico, Oklahoma, New York, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Virginia, Washington D.C, Virgin Islands, West Virginia, and Wisconsin U.S.

The drawings usually take place in Tallahassee in a modern studio owned by the Florida Lottery.

History of the Powerball lottery

The Powerball lottery was the first of its kind to incorporate two drums into the draws. This allowed for higher odds with regard to the jackpot as well as an increase in the number of levels at which one is eligible for a prize. The concept of using two drums was introduced by Steve Caputo, who worked for the Oregon Lottery. Needless to say, the idea soon caught on and Euro Millions, Mega Millions, Powerball Australia and Thunderball UK joined the fray of games to apply this addition.

Powerball first went on air in the year 1996 during the Atlanta Summer Olympics where five remote draws took place. The Georgia Lottery decided to leave the Powerball lottery a few weeks after this first airing however, this action being classified as the first and only one of its kind. The drawings were filmed at Screenscape Studios located in Iowa up to 2008 and hosted by Mike Pace, a local radio personality and the host of MUSL since the inception of the American Lotto in 1988. The exit of the Georgia Lottery from Powerball led to the state being excluded from the MUSL also in 1996, and was only returned to the fray in the year 2000 following a Powerball cross-expansion.

Powerball location, draws and schedule:

The draws are held twice every week on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:00 PM. They consist of six prerecorded draws, four that take place before the actual draw known as “test draws” and the remainder done afterwards known as “post-test draws”. Harvey, Covington & Thomas, LLC (an accounting firm) conduct an audit of the results before they are considered official. The draws are usually held in Tallahassee in a studio owned by the Florida Lottery but are at times conducted elsewhere for the sake of expansion with regard to the jurisdiction of the game.

History of the Powerball Jackpot

The highest amount ever accrued in the Powerball lottery was $1.586 billion which happened in January, 2016. This is followed by a $587.5 million jackpot (available in cash or annuity values) that occurred on November 28th, 2012. The jackpot could be paid in 29 yearly installments (with a tax rate of 36%) or all at once (with a 50% tax rate). The jackpot was available in annuity valued at $587.5 million or cash valued at $384.7 million. This was won by two individuals located in Missouri and Arizona respectively.

Powerball also happened to set the record for the biggest lottery prize won by a single ticket when an individual in Michigan bought a ticket that eventually won $337 million (in annuity) or $223.7 million (in cash). This occurred on August 15th, 2012.

Powerball Strategies

There are two main strategies that can be taken by players of the Powerball lottery. They consist of using the quick pick system to randomly select the numbers on the ticket, or manually selecting the numbers by oneself. Statistics have shown that 70 – 80% of people who buy Powerball tickets use the random quick pick system to aid their selection. The same percentage range also makes up the winning combinations of Powerball draws, and the computer system can ensure an individual’s choice is not affected by any personal slants.

Other advantages that can be enjoyed from the “quick pick” option include the creation of excitement as one does not know the combination they will receive, as well as saving time in cases where an individual is filling in more than one entry. The manual selection is useful in cases where an individual would prefer to use the frequency table in a bid to choose from a collection of commonly picked numbers in previous draws.
